September 6, 2007

Rabbi Tobias Gabriel was accused by more then one woman of clergy sexual abuse / professional sexual misconduct.

Last night (September 5, 2007) the Vaad Hakavoad of the Rabbinical Assembly (RA) and the Cantor Assembly (CA) decided to recommend the expulsion of Rabbi Tobias Gabriel from both organizations. We are now waiting for the executive committee of the RA to make a final decision.

The Cantors Assembly recently expelled Tobias Gabriel from their organization and stated that he would not be permitted to apply for membership in the future.
It is good that the official Jewish leaders are clearly sending the message that sexual misconduct will not be tolerated.
In Gabriel's case there a great deal of evidence showing that he had many affairs with many women while working at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, and that the head rabbi, Rabbi Frydman-Kohl, knew about his activities and covered for him.
Why the lay executives of the Beth Tzedec are willing to accept such leadership from their head rabbi is hard to understand. They too must now send a clear message that such behaviour and such leadership will not be tolerated.
