Thread #15 - The Secret Cases of Shmuel Juravel and Rabbi Moshe Eisemann

This is a continuation of the discussion of Thread #14

It appears that Rabbis' Heinemann, Hopfer and Neuberger were able to keep these case out of the news media.

Shmuel Juravel (AKA: Samuel Juravel) / Rabbi Moshe Eiseman (AKA: Rabbi Moshe Eisemann)

Samuel Juravel
Shmuel Juravel is the son of Rabbi Moshe Juravel who is employeed as a teacher at the Torah Institute of Baltimore.

Shmuel Juravel was indicted on March 29, 2006, on the offenses of using a computer to persuade, induce and entice a minor to engage in prostitution or other sexual activity, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2422(b) (Count One); traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of attempting to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2423(b) & (e) (Count Two); and, knowingly possessing material containing images of child pornography, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2252A(a)(5)(B) (Count Three).

On August 10, 2006 he plead guilty to three counts of traveling to have sex with a child and use of the Internet to entice a child to engage in illegal sex acts.

Samuel Zev Juravel will spend 262 months in jail and a lifetime of supervised release. He also faces a fine to be determined by the court upon sentencing. There is no probation, no parole and no appeal. That was the plea agreement.

*****************************************
Excerpt from Shmuel’s court documents:
He was in Alabama to meet (Name Removed). The name on the email headings was (Name Removed), but he thought his true name was (Name Removed). (Name Removed) was introducing Juravel to two boys, ages 11, 12, or 13. Juravel said it was not sex, “it was an exploration.” His plan was for the boys to masturbate while he watched. One of the boys was supposed to have brown hair with hazel eyes and 95 pounds. The other had brown hair and brown eyes. When asked about the “j/o and porn” mentioned in the emails, Juravel advised “j/o” meant jacking off.
…........

Juravel said he had two computers at his residence, one located in the den and the other in the master bedroom. His internet service provider was Comcast with a screen name of szjj@comcast. He advised there were some gay porn movies in his home, but no movies of children. He claimed he is not gay, but has been curious for about a year. He had a male massage in Atlanta once which “came with release,” although he had to perform the release himself. When asked “why young boys,” Juravel responded “I don’t know.” He had some sexual experiences when he was 12 - 13 years old with some male friends of the same age which consisted of mutual masturbation or “masturbation both ways.” Juravel advised he had never met (Name Removed), and said “we had an arrangement.” (Name Removed) made Juravel cut the bills, three $100 bills, in half and mail them. He gave (Name Removed) the other half at the time of the meeting. Juravel advised he brought a suitcase containing adult porn videos, magazines, and condoms. He stopped on the way and bought the condoms because he thought (Name Removed) would ask if he had them.

Rabbi Moshe Eiseman
There have been serious allegations made against Rabbi Moshe Eiseman over the last several years of molesting boys at Ner Israel Rabbinical College (Baltimore, MD). The allegations were first reported by a blogger by the name of Unorthodox Jew. These allegations have since been confirmed by various reliable rabbinic sources.

Recently there was confirmation that Rabbi Moshe Eisemann was removed from Ner Israel. The problem is that it is unknown to where he has moved to. Many people are concerned because he is STILL a danger to boys in what ever community he now resides in. The demand was that he pay restitution to all of his past victims, that he enter into residential treatment for sex offenders , that he never work in an enviroment that he has access to children, that he be monitored when ever he is out in public and that he makes a public apology.

If you have any questions regarding the allegations made against Rabbi Moshe Eiseman, please contact the administration of Ner Israel and also Rabbi Yaakov Hopfer.

Each day that goes by the Rabbi Moshe Eiseman is in hiding puts another child at risk of harm.

Those who have been sexually victimized deserve to be treated with respect and dignity by professionals who have the experience and training to work with survivors of sex crimes. It is also very helpful if survivors contact local rape crisis centers who have free legal advocates available to go with them to file police reports.

There is a realistic fear that Rabbi Eiseman will return to Russia or return to working with Russian immigrants. These communities also need to be made aware of the past allegations and that if survivors come forward that they be referred to local rape crisis centers.

Those in power at Ner Israel have a long history of covering up cases of child sex abuse.

Don't forget that those connected to Ner Israel were actively involved in covering up the case of Rabbi Matis Weinberg for over forty years. The first known case of Matis offending was when he was only sixteen years old. His first known victim was his own sibling. We can't forget that Rabbi Matis Weinberg is the beloved son of Rabbi Yaakov Weinberg (past Rosh Yeshiva/Dean of Ner Israel and Rebbitzen Chana Weinberg. Matis Weinberg is also the nephew of Rabbi Noah Weinberg of Aish HaTorah. His sister Aviva Weisbord is married to the current dean of students of Ner Israel - Rabbi Beryl Weisbord.

The goal is to prevent on more child from becoming the next victim and to ensure those who have already been sexually victimize receive help.

A blogger asked who ?

All that were mentioned. A civil
action will take place in the near
future. The rabbi's will he called to testify "under oath" as to who knew what and when. Coming out of that proceding, there will most likely be criminal charges filed against some of the rabbi's; the ones that knew or had been told about juravel. They can "gee wiz", O'golly, "I never realized" all they want but even for rabbi's, the law is the law is the law. And they thought they were above it all. They will be exposed to their following ; shul's,schools, all of it. Lessons will be learned. After all, isn't that what their lives are based on,learning lessons ?

Georgia man handed lengthy sentence in child sex case

Note From Jewish Whistleblower:

This is a huge victory for the efforts of those who put Juravel's survivors in touch with the FBI (The Awareness Center and the Jewish Survivors blog). Those efforts forced a very unfavorable plea agreement in a case where in the past people like Juravel got a slap on the wrist and no jail time. This is a very strong message to those in Baltimore who have protected Juravel and other sexual predators.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A Georgia man will serve a lengthy prison sentence following his conviction for traveling to have sex with a child and using the Internet to entice a child to engage in illegal sex acts.

At a hearing yesterday, U.S. District Judge Scott Coogler ordered 30-year-old Samuel Zev Juravel of Savannah to serve 262 months (22 years) in prison. He must also remain under supervised probation for the rest of his life.

Federal court records show Juravel admitted in a plea deal, that in March he drove from Savannah to Birmingham to meet what he believed to be were two boys, ages 12 and 11, for illegal sex acts. The youngsters turned out to be law enforcement officers.

Juravel's arrest and prosecution is part of the F-B-I's Project Safe Childhood. The program targets Internet crimes against children. http://www.usdoj.gov/ag/speeches/2006/ag_speech_060517.html

For your new year, what will be an even greater victory is when the combined rabbi's from Balt. and the Rabbi from savannah will be called in an upcoming civil suit, to testify ,under oath, of what they knew and why they didn't do anything about it. Remember, it will be under oath, subject to the rules and laws of purjery, not "jewish" law, where with a nopd and a blink, all can be forgiven.
Many people have come forth, and when all the facts are compaired by the experts, it will come out that many of the rabbi's knew about juravel but turned there combined heads the other way. For shame,I say.
I'm not sure if the new year will turn out so well for the people who think they are above it all. We will have to wait and see. I know several of the rabbi's have consulted with atty's. The truth is the truth is the truth !

Well I'll wait until the civil action takes place to make a judgement of
"who knew what and when" although I've certainly heard comments in both communities that the Rabbi's in both communities knew about Juravel, for years and years.

If it comes out that the Rabbi's in Baltimore and the Rabbi in Savannah knew about Juravel, will they be asked to resign or what ?

They all have their "elite" group that I believe would support them to the end, whatever the end means.

Certainly the Savannah Rabbi has his job secure forever and ever.
He's in with the $$$ people although the rightious family that
Juravel married into just might see the Rabbi in a new light and perhaps changes will take place.

Inaction in the face of such a serious situation is very troubling, and raises important questions about whether there was an attempt by the Baltimore Rabbi's and the Savannah Rabbi to cover up criminal activity involving minor children in Baltimore and Savannah, to keep it from coming to light to both communities. Certainly the Baltimore Rabbi's and the Savannah Rabbi owes the community an explination. One way or the other, the truth will and should come out,
you can bet on that !

Either the Baltimore Rabbi's AND the Savannah Rabbi were grossly negligent for not taking action when the "red flags" went up regarding Juravel (three seperate calls to the Savannah Rabbi) and not looking into the alligations against Juravel, or they , including the Savannah Rabbi delibrately looked the other way in hopes that the impending scandle would just go away ; either way they owe the combined community an explination of their action or inaction in the matter, if not their combined resignations.

Had there even been a hint of what was going on in Savannah, and the continued calling upon Juravel to lead the Shabbos Dovening, is a disgrace upon the Rabbi and certainly a disgrace upon Hasham.

The Rabbi needs to be accountable to the "flock".

Are you kidding ! Do you think for a minute that any of the Rabbi's, including the Savannah Rabbi will come out and admit or even acknowledge that they did anything wrong. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil and don't me involved, seems to be the motto of the Rabbi's. And the combined flock, just keep baaaaing along.

The Savannah Rabbi is concerned about the proper way to pay a shiva call , but try to approach him regarding the Juravel matter and he doesn't even respond.

I've lost all my faith in the Rabbi's. There combined lack of response regarding Juravel is no better then the Priests of the Church..They have brought themselves down to that level. What a disgrace !

AND it's not over yet !

Juravel is being held at the Federal Detention Center (FDC) in Philadelphia,Pa.. It is an Administrative Facility housing male and female PRETRIAL INMATES for Eastern District of Penn., all of Deleware and Southern N. J.

He was sentenced to 22 years, in a plea bargan but continues to have other charges pending. After that's over with, no telling how long that will take, he faces local
charges and a civil suit in Savannah, where the Rabbi will be called to testify (under oath and American Law) about what he knew and when he knew it. Remember this will be under oath . It's not over until the lady sings and it will be quite a song.

I don't see much difference between the questions being asked about the people in Congress and the Rabbi's regarding Juravel.
Pretty simple:
Who knew what and when .
Were the congressman covering up ?
Were the Rabbi's covering up ?

I would hope that we will find out the answers to both issues ; although different are quite similar. Who knew what and when.

No one is going to go against any of the rabbi's, that's for sure.

No one in balbitome has the combined nerve AND as far as the savannah rabbi is concerned, well, he has the backing, for whatever he does, of the board of the shul. He can do no wrong. His kids are married into his family and certainly no one will go against the preceived power of that family, although power over what.

So leave it along, it's done. Juravel is locked up for 22 years and that's that. The Rabbi's will continue to go the way of the $$$,and nothing will change. That's the way it was,it will be and always be.

With the questions being asked in Congress ; "Who knerw what and when?", it seems to me that the Jewish Community should demand that the Rabbi's in Baltimore and The Rabbi in Savannah should come forth with the answers regarding Juravel ; Who knew what and when ?.

It's going around the Savannah that The Rabbi was told :
1: told 5 years ago told about juravel by his neighbor.
2: told via a phone call about juravel.
3: told by a local atty about juravel.
All this several years ago.

It seems that the only aqction that the Rabbi in Savannah took was to invite juravel to doven on Shabbos, thereby elevating him in the eyes of the congregation. Why?

I believe that the community has a right to know what the Rabbi knew and when he knew about Juravel.

I don't expect him to come forth on his own but when the civil action takes place he will be asked under oath when he knew and when. Then we will know the truth about who knew what and when.

Leave the Rabbi alone. It's over with. Shmuel Juravel is in jail for 22 years with a lifetime of probation after that. It's over with.

If what you say, and at this point, it's only rumor about the Rabbi, that'/s over as well. If's it's true, he's learned his lesson,if it's not true, then your posts are all for naught. Leave it alone.

Hasham will be the judge for the Rabbi or Rabbi's, that should be enough. The Savannah Rabbi is so secure in his position in this community that there is not a chance that he will be fired, resign or be sactioned. Leave it alone.

October 10, 2006 6:16 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

How in the world can you ask to leave it alone. If the Savannah Rabbi did know or have any conversations years ago regarding Juravel AND he didn't do anything about it, doesn't that make him somewhat liable for his inaction.

All the community is asking is did he know or was he told about juravel and if so, why didn't ho do something about it. Did he think that he could "save" juravel ?
Is that why he asked him to lead the service. To show him the right path ? Did the Rabbi know or not.

So many people in the community are asking and talking about it.

So many comments are made after Shul on Shabbos, over the telephone during the week. People want to know. I would think that
the congregation deserves a reply from the Rabbi. Stop the rumors,if they are rumors before the civil
action takes place. If he knew, admit it,own up to it and life will go on. It will be more of a shock if it's found out that he did know in a courtroom. He has a chance to tell the truth, set the record straight, let the congragation know.

It's so similar to what's going on in our government, same questions being asked. Who knew what and when?

The Rabbi is human subject to making the same mistakes that we all make. As long as there wasn't criminal intent involved, he's O.K. in my book.

If he truly believes in Hasham, and I believe that he truly does, He knows who will judge him and that's all there is to it.

Leave him alone. Go on with your lives. It's over !

I'm sorry ! My post was not directed to R'Eisemann. It was directed at the Savannah Rabbi, who will not admit to a thing, can do no wrong in the eyes of the board,is entrenched so well that nothing, short of him being caugh in an open lie, which may happen when he is under oath, will budge him from his post.

Typical of his Savannah following..they just follow.

It's over as far as trying to find out what he knew and when , unless
he admits to knowing,or it come out in court. It's a disgrace !

October 10, 2006 7:33 PM

As far as I'm concerned, it's over regarding Juravel. He's in proson for along time. He's the one that committed the crime.
As far as the Savannah Rabbi is concerned, Hasham will be his judge. That's good enough for me.

Reading this posting from one to fifteen, I've come to the conclusion that the rabbi's are just like any one of us. Good ones and bad ones. Some truly believe, some are in it for the money.

I've certainly lost respect for several rabbi's and their profession.
Certainly will not follow blindly as I used to. Certainly can see that they have flaws ; trouble is,don't know which one have the flaws. Will continue to believe in Hasham but doubt that I will send my children to an all Jewish school or a Yeshiva.

I don't need to know anymore about who knew what and when. It's done and has left a mark on me and my family. Will rest but with one eye open, that's for sure.

You got that pegged 100% correctly.
The Rabbi in Savannah is firmly ensconced and nothing short of his killing someone will end his tenure.
(and even then there would be those who would want to explain it as "Self defense").
He is a wise and very shrewd person who knows that he is not above the law.
I am sure that when he received the calls he took counsel with many of the attorneys at his beckon call who advised him. In other words, I am sure that his tushy is well covered.

I am sure that if and when he is questioned under oath he will come out smelling like the proverbial rose because it has been planned that way. He will neither "gee whiz", "oh golly" OR "I never realized".

I would not waste my energies on slamming him. He clearly knows how to best work the system.

I also think that if he were to be in a shul in someplace like NY or a larger community, he wouldn't be nearly as successful.
Savannahians have been and will always be followers of the dollar which has kept the community afloat all these years.
That is the culture of the small southern town. They are not deservant of attention on their own merits, so they have buy themselves the things that garner attention. Examples: A kollel cadre full of rabbis,a humongous shul bigger than they can fill but 3 times a year(Yom Kippur Kol Nidre,Yizkor and Neilah) and a lovely old age home.

Leave them alone to their own devices. I think that they have learned a harsh lesson from Shmuel Juravel. Doubtlessly, they will be wary for a while, and then slip back into the same "ignorance is bliss" attitude that made them such victims. I only hope the children will be safe next time.

Don't get me wrong Savannahians who read this, you have a lovely town and community. But you have to realize it is a 100% MANUFACTURED community and that there is nothing whatsoever inherently appealing about Savannah's Jewish community.

But then again, that is how smaller Jewish communities have survived.

Best of luck to you all.

That's a harsh post and a sad one.

"He is a wise and shrewd person" !

Sad in the fact that he has to be refered to as a shrewd person.

Wish it could have been a "wise and kind Rabbi" or a "wise and considerate Rabbi".

Money in Savannah corrupts, even getting to the shrude person in the form of a Rabbi.

Now that we have gotten rid of SJ, how about going after the guy in the BBJ who has "turned on" our sons to the pleasures of pot. Every one at the shul knows he does this, but laughs and thinks he is a great guy who does alot for the shul.

Who's the guy that has "turned on our kids to pot" ? First time I've heard of that, although it's common knowledge that many of the "yuppies" (40's & 50"s) all smoked pot and did drugs.

I don't see where anyone could see that it's good for the shul.

Perhaps the rabbi will give a sermon about that, although that might strike a little close to home.

For the first time in my 50 year association with BBJ, and certainly the first time since the current rabbi is in place, that the first negative "truths" are coming out about this person.

He knew about juravel, knows about what went on and what's going
on,and now, with the ABILITY TO POST ANONYMOUS, without fear of reprisal from the inner circle, the true facts come out.

But his job is secure as the inner circle certainly won't make a move against this person. He's involved in so many business deals that it would upset the economy of the community and after all, isn't it all about the money. Sad but true.

Sad but true and that's what everyone is speaking about. It's sad but true.

Finally a post that brings the truth to light, a post that "dares"
to speak about the cunning of the rabbi. It's truly sad but true. What so many of us have thought but have never said in the open.

Hardly to be considered great..Well anyway, it's a living !

Does anyone in the BBJ really know the educational background of the rabbi?
Where did he go to college?
Everyone knows he was a great student of R'Shmuelevitz at the Mirrer Yeshiva in Brooklyn, of that no question.
But what about his secular background?
Does he have a degree or just "college" experience?
Clearly he can learn and speak well but many think that his pastoral experience came as "on the job".
Do we have a rabbi whose credentials could compete with either his illustrious predecessor, Rabbi Rosenberg, Z"l or the rabbis of today?
What about his business acumen? His ethics?
Many in the BBJ are growing somewhat skeptical based on this SJ episode and want some answers.

When is the next congregational meeting where his contract is up for renewal? Perhaps we should ask some questions and not just go like lemmings over the cliff?
Remember, it's not JUST the big contributors that make up our shul, it's all the families who pay our dues and buy tickets and support programs that make up the shul!
Maybe we can enlist the help of the RCA or the OU?
I'm not out to get him if he's on the "up and up". But if he has been "bought off" by this mysterious (not so mysterious) inner circle in our community, then we need to get to the bottom of it and soon!

Until things are clarified, I may just walk out before the sermon and return afterwards.

Shmuel deserved this and then some, I still can not believe home some people believe compassion is deserved for child molesters. I am still in shock that Robert Isaacson tried to act pro-bono to defend someone of this nature. Mr. Isaacson has always been known to be untrustworthy in Savannah but taking this case just shows the level to soullessness he has. May God have mercy on both their souls...
