Rabbi Charged After TV Sex Sting
WTOP, D.C.
May 20, 2006

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A rabbi has been charged with traveling across state lines to engage in sex acts with a 13-year-old boy after being caught in a nationally televised sting operation.
Fifty-six-year-old David Kaye of Rockville appeared in U.S. District Court in Alexandria.

He's being held pending a detention hearing Monday.

Kaye resigned from his position as vice president of the Rockville-based Institute for Jewish Leaders and Values in the wake of the sting.

In November, NBC's "Dateline" program ran a sting operation in northern Virginia with an Internet watchdog group called Perverted Justice.

Kaye was one of 19 people who showed up at a Herndon home after chatting online with individuals they believed to be underage boys and girls.

When they got there, they were confronted by a television reporter and camera crew.

Former Rockville Rabbi Charged In Child Sex Sting
WJZ, MD

A rabbi was charged with traveling across state lines to engage in sex acts with a 13-year-old boy after being caught in a nationally televised sting operation.

David Kaye, 56, of Rockville, Md., made an initial appearance Friday in U.S. District Court on charges of coercion and enticement and travel with intent to engage in illegal sexual contact with a minor. He was detained pending a detention hearing Monday.

Kaye did not speak during Friday's hearing and his lawyer declined comment.

Kaye resigned from his position as vice president of Rockville-based PANIM: the Institute for Jewish Leaders and Values, in the wake of the sting.

In November, NBC's "Dateline" program ran a sting operation in northern Virginia in conjunction with an Internet watchdog group called Perverted Justice. Kaye was one of 19 people who showed up at a Herndon, Va., home after chatting online with individuals they believed to be underage boys and girls.

Prosecutors say Kaye used an Internet chat room to entice what he thought was a 13-year-old boy into meeting him and engaging in illegal sexual activity. Kaye traveled from Rockville to Herndon on Aug. 17 to meet the boy, but when he showed up at the home he was confronted by a television reporter and camera crew.

Kaye is the second person charged by federal prosecutors in Alexandria in connection with the Perverted Justice sting. Joseph J. Wunderler, 29, an Army sergeant at Fort Belvoir, pleaded guilty in April to attempted enticement.

Wunderler admitted that he engaged in multiple sexually explicit chats online with a person he thought was a 14-year-old girl, and traveled to the same Herndon home and was confronted by the same television reporter and camera crew that confronted Kaye.

Wunderler will be sentenced in July.

Xavier Von Erck, founder of the Perverted Justice Web site, said he was particularly pleased with Kaye's arrest, calling him "one of the most arrogant people we have come across."

Von Erck said Perverted Justice stings have resulted in 58 convictions in 26 states.

The sting shows have been outstanding. NBC did an incredible job luring these guys in and then dropping a bomb on them.
Some of the guys are clearly dirty sleazy guys, some of them though, "seem" to have made a stupid decision to act on something that should have been kept on the internet and not actualized.
Therein I think, lies the danger. As long as these men were active on the net AND ONLY ON THE NET, they were harmless, or doing harm only to themselves (As for kids, parents have to take responsibility for what their kids are doing online).
Once they are able to act out these fantasies, what was once just fantasy becomes reality and repeats itself over and over and over.

The fact that any of these guys was able to overcome his inhibitions and show up to have sex with what he thought was a underage kid, makes them dangerous. The first-timers are the lucky ones. Hopefully the shock and shame of getting caught will be enough to deter them and make them seek some help. The ones who had records are the ones who needed to be out of society and I hope, that as a result, are now out of society.
As for the rabbi who sent naked pics of himself, he deserves whatever he gets. I guess he didn't really learn too much, or internalize anything in whatever seminary he attended.
For someone to have supposedly committed themselves to religion, etc. the punishment is fitting.

Speaking sexually explicitly to real teens on the Internet is called "solicitation" and "enticement" and is not fantasy- it is a federal crime and a crime in many states as well. The Internet is federal jurisdiction as well as state jurisdiction. The federal Age of Consent is 18 or older. In many cases it is illegal to speak sexually explicitly with a child; certainly in many states and federally it is illegal to transmit pornographic naked pictures of one's self masturbating to a minor or one whom one believes is a minor- it does harm a child to view this material, and in many states the chatlog alone is sufficient circumstancial evidence for a felony conviction, without any actual overt intent nor significant steps taken towards a meeting with the child for sex.

How can it be fantasy when they believe they are talking illegally with a REAL child for sexual gratification and enticement? These men "groom" children for sex, prostituition, pornography, abduction, sometimes the grooming chats occur over months and years, and then results in the perv gaining the child's trust, for a rape, an abduction, or for the creation of child porn or worse. Do NOT minimize the illegality and the immorality of the acts of harm these men intend to cause to children by their alleged fantasies that are really NOT fantasies but communications towards enticement. Child rape is not a fantasy and the harmful effects can last a lifetime- every child porn image is a rape victim and the children are re-victimized with each trade of that image- because children cannot consent to sex and the child porn black market business fuels the rape, abduction, maiming, and killing of thousands of children world wide each year for the sake of YOUR alleged fantasies and selfish cowardly orgasms that "were harmless, doing harm only to themselves" /sarcasm!

It is not the children luring the pervs, it is always the adults who have the upper hand. I save my sympathy for those who cannot, who cannot be expected to know better, by law and by reason- the children.

Given a choice - free speech for adults talk dirty to kids and pretend it is fantasy vs Child Rape?

I choose to protect the children!

Child predators count upon the enabling view that the anonymous commenter posted. Following his advice would be stupid and harmful to both children and adults.

I would not trust a child in the care of ANY man that would speak to a child in the manner of these men. I would not trust a single one with his own child either, of the 800+ men that Perverted-Justice has busted online over the last two years, not one was innocent- they all premeditated their crimes and many are beginning to be processed through the judicial system. They all need to be convicted registered sex offenders and locked up away from children. Let them get their counseling from a jail cell.

Just read a few ROR's ("Right of Reply") and you will see that they all claim the same things- ANYTHING to try and gain sympathy and they are only sorry that they got caught! 1) "It wasn't me, I was hacked." 2) "I was roleplaying fantasizing, never intended to meet" 3)I never thought of doing something like this, it was my first time" We get these from EVERY busted perv even the previously convicted child sex predators on bond or parole for doing the same thing last week.
Once they are on the INTERNET talking to someone they believe is a child, then this ceases to be "thought" and becomes enticement. If they are fantasizing why do they give out their cell phone numbers and mapqwest directions? They are accessing risk everytime they ask the kid about their parents jobs and schedules and siblings, etc.

Enticement of someone under the age of 18 by an adult at least 3 years of age older, carries a minimum 5 year sentence in federal prison. Keep your pervy speech in your head and go get help for your problem. Our children are NOT on the INTERNET prowling for pervs but, I guarantee you- we are.
Respectfully,
Intelec

That's the difference between a rabbi and a priest. Priests rape 10 year old boys and rabbis rape 12 year old boys!
