Former defense minister Yitzhak Mordechai can keep his rank as a reserve major-general, an IDF tribunal decided on Monday in a hearing on an appeal submitted by the Judge Advocate-General's Office.

In September, a military tribunal ruled that despite his conviction on sexual assault and harassment charges, Mordechai, the only general to have ever commanded all three regional commands, should not be stripped of his rank.

In October, Judge Advocate-General Avichai Mandelblit decided to appeal the decision on the grounds that the tribunal failed to take into account the serious nature of Mordechai's crimes.

In their ruling, the judges wrote that they accepted the prosecution's argument that IDF officers needed to hold to a system of higher moral values while upholding the public's trust in the military. Nevertheless, they ruled that Mordechai could keep his rank.
